An unknown enemy has stolen the legendary Rosul stone and endangered the magic hiding the secret realm of the Ellouarch elves from strange and dangerous modern America. The Lords of Emerlyr proclaim that Kelvy, a half-Ellouarch boy, is one of the conspirators. Kelvy is an unruly and resentful misfit, an enchanting liar, and magical incompetent. To save the Ellouarch and prove his innocence, Kelvy must find his long-lost human father, who disappeared years ago into our modern world with a talisman that can locate lost magic. Kelvy ventures across an American landscape alive with fabled and transmuted creatures, doomed fantastic races fighting endless wars over sacred sites, and outlandish technology that seems to him, well, magical.

But can Kelvy outwit or outrun regenerated demons and dragons sent by a mysterious sorcerer and business tycoon who may be behind the plot to destroy Emerlyr? Can he evade the bounty scientists who think he’s an extraterrestrial and want to sell him to a lab? Can – or should – he trust his unwanted quest companions, including a dog who claims to be a prince of the fallen lycanthropic kingdom and a cursed, kleptomaniac gargoyle? And if Kelvy solves the mystery of Emerlyr’s failing magic, can he make the sacrifices necessary to save the Ellouarch, most of whom have rejected and condemned him?
